Why Chartreuse Streamers Work for Trout

Chartreuse is an excellent streamer colour to use when the water is stained. Predators, like Brook Trout or Brown Trout, can more easily spot a streamer in chartreuse because fluorescent emits light of a longer wavelength after absorbing light of a shorter wavelength. Thus, a fluorescent fly that appears chartreuse/yellow in colour is absorbing light in the green-blue-ultraviolet portion of the spectrum – i.e. colours that are available at greater depths! This is why fluorescent colours can be seen at greater depths than normal. Fluorescent colours also work particularly well on cloudy days, when the visible light spectrum is diminished but UV light (short wavelength) is still quite strong.
