How to set up a fly fishing reel. How to add backing to your reel. What is backing?
When setting up your fly fishing reel, in most situations you will want to first put backing onto your spool before adding the fly line. Fly fishing backing is normally micron or dacron line that is attached to the reel end of your fly line in case your fish gets farther away from you than the length of your line. Fly line backing is inexpensive line that prevents you from losing the fish or your fly line.
