In this video on how to choose a fly rod, Capt. Chris Myers explains and shows fly rods of different sizes or "weights" . When selecting a fly rod, you want to purchase a rod that is appropriate for the size of the fish you are targeting. With fly rods, smaller numbers denote a smaller size rod. A 3wt fly rod would be appropriate for some trout fishing, panfish, bass, shad, and small saltwater species. A 7 weight rod is appropriate for medium saltwater like redfish and drum, and larger freshwater fish. Large flyr ods like a 12 weight, would be used for big tarpon, sharks, cobia, atc.
There is not one fly rod that can cover all types of fishing just like there is not one type of conventional rod that is good for all fish. When choosing your fly rod, you want to get one that is most suited for the size of fish you target the most. many anglers tend to buy rods that are much heavier than they actually need.
